Jean-Louis Kerouac better known by his pen name, Jack Kerouac was a famous American novelist and poet. Jack was an icon of the Beat Generation. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on March 12, 1922. His real name was Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac. He entered Columbia University in 1940 but left a year later. He served in the merchant marine and worked as a laborer. By the mid-1950s, Kerouac had become a celebrity as a spokesman for the Beat Movement. Like other members of the Beat Movement, Kerouac spent his life trying to find comfort in sex, drugs, and literature. His life, his romances, and his highs were unnatural, fast. It caused him to live a life of never truly being him-self. He inspired the misguided and confused youth of the post-war era. His most famous novel was On The Road. This novel is the expression of a core philosophy that author Jack Kerouac shared with his Beat compatriots. Jack turned to Buddhism and it was reflected in his work. Kerouac’s literary work is a blend of issues ranging from poverty, drugs and travelling, to jazz, spirituality, and Buddhism. Jack passed away an abdominal hemorrhage on October 21, 1969, at the age of 47.
